Ministry announces distribution of 42,000 MT of grains across the country

Following President Bola Tinubu’s directive, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in Nigeria has begun the bagging process of the approved 42,000 metric tonnes of grains for distribution to economically disadvantaged citizens.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Sule Haruna, Director of the Food and Strategic Reserve Department (FSRD), confirmed the ongoing bagging process.

According to Haruna, grains stored in silos throughout the country, including millet, sorghum, maize, garri, and other commodities, are being packaged before being distributed. In order to ensure a more organized and efficient distribution system, he stressed the importance of this process.

He mentioned that the decision would be made by the minister. He emphasized the ministry’s commitment to transparency by inviting journalists to witness the distribution.

What are the beneficiaries?

Each of the 774 Local Government Areas across the federation will benefit from this initiative. By tapping into the national strategic reserves, President Bola Tinubu addressed the growing concerns about the rising cost of food in Nigeria on February 8.

In order to ensure food security, the Federal Government is taking steps to alleviate the economic challenges facing vulnerable citizens.

Throughout the bagging process, the ministry remains committed to fulfilling the presidential directive and contributing to the well-being of ordinary Nigerians.

Here are some things you should know

Nigerian customs began distributing seized bags of rice at discounted prices to the populace to cushion the impact of food inflation.

When the food supply ran out, the crowd, upon hearing the distribution would resume the next day, rushed towards the barricades in search of rice bags, resulting in a deadly stampede that resulted in numerous casualties. This has led to a suspension of distribution.

A thorough investigation has been launched into the events leading up to this distressing incident.
