Drama As Protesting Labour Members Shut Down Top FG Official’s Office In Abuja
Protesting workers under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have shut down the entrance to the Office of the Head of Service building at the Federal Secretariat, Phase Two, in Abuja on Monday.
The NLC and TUC commenced a nationwide industrial action in response to the Federal Government’s proposal of a N60,000 minimum wage.
NLC President Joe Ajaero announced that the strike followed failed negotiations between the government and organized labour, as well as the government’s refusal to reverse the withdrawal of the power sector subsidy and the increase in electricity tariffs.
The unions had set a deadline of May 31, 2024, for the conclusion of new minimum wage negotiations. The government had increased its minimum wage offer from N57,000 to N60,000, while the labour unions reduced their demand from an initial N615,000 to N494,000, down from the previously proposed N497,000.
However, negotiations reached an impasse as the government remained firm on its N60,000 offer, leading to the declaration of a nationwide indefinite strike.
