President Faye Of Senegal Declares New Government, Drafts In New Faces

Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has unveiled a new government, introducing a lineup of fresh faces to key positions after his resounding victory in last month’s election.

The 44-year-old, a political newcomer who clinched a first-round win, pledged sweeping reforms during his campaign, marking his debut in elected office and making history as Senegal’s youngest president.

Faye is expected to work closely with his appointed Prime Minister and former mentor, Ousmane Sonko, who played a pivotal role in propelling Faye to power.

Sonko, in revealing the cabinet of 25 ministers, hailed it as a departure from the past, stating, “The government set up here on April 5 is a breakaway government… that embodies the project, a systemic transformation voted for by the Senegalese people.”

A significant appointment includes Birame Souleye Diop as the Energy Minister, a critical role given Senegal’s forthcoming oil and gas production, slated to commence in 2024.

Ousmane Diagne, formerly a public prosecutor at the Dakar Court of Appeal, assumes the position of Justice Minister.

Notably, the cabinet comprises four women, entrusted with portfolios including Foreign Affairs, Fisheries, Family and Youth, and Culture.

With Senegal grappling with challenges such as a 20% official unemployment rate, Sonko outlined the government’s priorities, emphasizing youth employment, cost of living reduction, and human rights protection.
